Buying a dog is quite an adventure. Most potential dog owners look for a dog that they really like in a pet store, and then the see one that just speaks to their heart right away. One look at the dog, and it is like magic.

Often dog owners remember feeling an instant connection to this one dog. This special bond will also be very powerful when it comes to the communication between dog and dog owner. Many a time, your dog will have a certain need, and simply by looking at him, you will intuitively know what it is.

When that happens, you most likely read your dog’s body language. They might have tried to communicate through wagging their tail or jumping up on something.

As you can imagine, reading a dog’s body language can be quite effective, if you know what exactly it is you are looking for; and how to interpret what you see.

Let’s start with the simplest one: the tail. The tail is like a compass needle. It gives you a very clear idea of your dog’s mood. For example, if he is cheerful or excited, he will be wagging his tail.

A dog who is insecure or fearful will often tuck their tail behind their legs. A straight and high tail can tell you that they are upset about something. The tail is one of the basic body languages that your dog may show.

Next, the ears: you’ll be able to see how a dog is feeling with their ears too. Ears that are cocked back or against the head are a sign that your dog is angry or upset.

This is the first indication that will tell you to back off. Ears that are relaxed and in their natural position mean that your dog is calm.

To sum up, it can be said that the two most important body parts that let you read your dog’s body language are the tail and his ears. If you get attuned to their signals, you will be able to interact with your dog much more effectively, because you will always know how he is feeling.

When people introduce new pets into their home, there is always some concern about whether existing pets will get along with the new addition. A new family member is always stressful, whether it is a new person, or a new pet.

The already existing pet in your home may not be used to other animals in its place. So it is a good idea to adequately introduce the new puppy to a cat that has been in the house for a while. If you are not sensitive enough this may well lead to behavioral problems with both of them.

The best way to introduce a new puppy into a home where there is already a cat in residence is slowly. For the first 2-3 days, you are going to want to keep the puppy in a smaller area of the home.

This will help to eliminate stress to the puppy when he first arrives in the home, and it will also allow your cat to see the situation is controlled.

The cat will have to get used to a lot of new things: different smell and different sounds the puppy will make. Help her to get accustomed to it, so it will not cause issues like scratching or urinating.

It can also help if you reassure your cat of her position in the house. You can do this by showing your cat some additional affection to take her fear of being replaced by a different pet.

While it may be difficult, try not to dote too much on the puppy during the first few days, as it can create a sense of rivalry among the pets, much like sibling rivalry in people.

What you ultimately want to reach is to help both pets to feel safe and secure in their home. You can reach this best by a slow introduction of the puppy to your cat.

Not only will you help ease your new puppy into his new surroundings, your cat will be able to slowly accept the new addition to the family.

Those of us with four-legged family members have to contemplate what to do with them when we are planning our family holidays. Camping is one of type of get away where most individuals feel pretty comfortable with bringing along their pets. With just the basic camping equipment, you can accomodate your pet but their is plenty of equipment out there that was designed particularly for them. Having a look at the various pet items that you might add to your camping equipment checklist may be worth spending the time.

Dog tents have been out for a while now and they're just lovely! They're also cheap and easy to store, carry, and pitch. Except for their size, there actually is not much of a difference between a dog tent and a human one. Most makers do make the tent floor at least partially detachable for easy cleaning and they make them secure so your puppies won't ramble off at night. They also are small enough to fit inside your tent if you wanted.

<noindex>Dog sleeping bags</noindex> are fairly new and many individuals wouldn't even consider purchasing one due to our belief that dogs are naturally set to handle most weather conditions. There are others that would feel better off knowing that their furry friend was wrapped up just as tightly as they are. There are some designs that I consider unique like the ones called Alpine Sleepers. They seem to be a combination of a sleeping bag and a travel bed. The boffom is nice and comfy and the top is a blanket that’s attached to the base with buttons. If the dog does not want to be wrapped firmly, then you can simply unsnap the buttons. Other dog sleeping bags provide a mix of great comfort and simple material. You may also consider using sleeping bags that were designed for little kids.

Another piece of camping gear you may want to think about purchasing for your dog is a pet push chair! You heard right, I revealed a pet stroller. These are obviously not required for all pets but for those of us who have elderly pets, very little pets, or untrained puppies, they could make your hiking trips far easier.

Overall, I might suggest looking into adding gear for your pet to your camping list. Our litle pets are definately worth it!

Do you really need pet insurance if you are a responsible pet-owner? We love our furry friends, even those without any fur, but the costs of having a pet are mounting and there is a lot of pressure on pet-owners to have the “best” of everything. The simple truth of pet-owning reality is a lot of what we do spend on our pets is simply unwarranted for their benefit – what we spend really is about making ourselves feel better.

You can cut down the cost of having a pet, and save the money for something you, or they, will really need, such as healthcare. Look at these simple, ready-to-go tips for cutting the cost of pet ownership:
Do not buy or feed your pet premium pet food.

The word “premium” is thrown around a lot by pet food manufacturers but the truth is it is simply a marketing label. There is no legal definition of “premium” when it comes to pet food – there is simply dog food and dog food, or cat food and cat food – premium dog food is still dog food. A major issue is that when your pet has a dietary need, owners buy “premium” foods thinking this will better nourish their pet. Unfortunately, it isn’t true and a so-called “premium” brand is not necessarily better for your pet and in any event, if there is a dietary need because of a medical condition, you should follow your veterinarian’s advice very precisely.

Look at generics for flea treatment

Frontline Plus is the leading flea and tick medication for prevention and eradication of a very real pest. It helped Frontline that the patent for the active ingredient was held by the company selling it, however that patent has now expired. This means that manufacturers are bringing to the market a range of flea and tick pet medications which contain the active ingredient, fipronil, and this means cheaper alternatives to the high priced Frontline Plus. Check out Petco’s SentryFiproGuard Plus and Walmart stocks PetArmor Plus ($28 for a 3-month supply compared to Frontline’s $62).

Count the cost of pet insurance

It is rare for a pet insurance policy to pay out more than the premiums you pay in. In other words, you are better off saving the money for a rainy day. In the vast majority of cases where there is a claim on a pet insurance policy, the payout is substantially less than premiums paid to date. A pet insurance policy costing a few bucks a month may be worth it for your peace of mind, but in all except the most extreme situations, that is all they are good for.

Engage in preventative pet care

Think about investing in a toothbrush and meat flavored toothpaste for your mutt or feline. This may sound like a money water, however the engaging in preventative dental hygiene for a few bucks will save you hundreds in dental work at the vet. Also make sure you keep your pet’s vaccinations current – the cost of bringing a pet’s shots back up to date is more expensive than a booster, and in any event, vaccination is far more cheaper than the cost of having to deal with a preventable disease.

Go and have a good look online and what you’ll discover, is that in the pictures it can at times be impossible to notice any profound difference between real sheep skin footwear, and synthetics. Then when you check out the price differences you’ll also see that you’re going to have to pay more for the genuine article. So having taken these two factors in, why should anyone opt for real wool, and leather?

To begin with, let me start out by noting that there are a lot of things in life that are similar at first glance. Go beyond the surface though, and the differences in quality begin to appear, and real and fake sheep skin products are no different in this respect. Also one more thing that you’ll find in most all instances is that the “sacrifices in quality” that have to be made for the savings, just don’t make it worth it in the end.

So the first reason you should go with real sheep skin when you’re shopping for footwear, is that it has a far longer service life. It’s real wool and real leather and if properly cared for, it can last for years. So yes fake product is cheaper at the checkout counter but all your savings will be lost when you have to go back each year to buy a new pair of slippers, boots, or moccasins.

Then again where moisture absorbency is so important with footwear, real leather and wool is by far the better product. In the end synthetics are plastic, so whether it’s plastic fibber or the outer lining, it’s going to absorb “zero moisture”. On the other hand, real wool and leather are both absorbent, so for door and fungus prevention they’re both by far the better choice. For footwear in particular.

Then again if you plan on purchasing moccasins or slippers as a gift and they do make a great gift, be aware that whoever you’re giving them to probably knows the difference between real, and fake. It’s the first thing that most people check when they receive sheep skin products and there’s just no beating the look, feel, and even the smell of real leather, and real wool right out of the box.

Then on a final note, it’s worth mentioning that real sheep skin is in no way related to the fur industry that has been the subject of so much controversy in recent years. Sheep are raised in wide open pastures and their skins are a by-product of the meat business. Also it’s well worth mentioning that Australia, where most tanned sheep skin comes from, has laws in place to insure that farm animals are treated humanely.

FACT 1: You, the dog owner, are mainly accountable for your "closest friend" obesity. Most dog proprietors do over feed their pet by 20% or even more.

FACT 1: You, the dog owner, are mainly accountable for your “closest friend” obesity. Most dog proprietors do over feed their pet by 20% or even more.

FACT 2: Table scrapes aren’t the very best kind of food for that favorite beloved canine. Most table scrapes contain an inordinate high calorie count, because of huge amounts of body body fat, starches and sugar.

FACT 3: The unburned calories will probably be distributed around your pet’s body and changed into “body body fat”. Keeping your dog active might help melt off the additional calories triggered by table scrapes. It’s time to take a look at additional particulars which assists you keep your K-9 within the proper weight level.

FACT 4: The local vet ought to be consulted before putting your pet dieting. The neighborhood vet will have the ability to determine whether your dog is definitely overweight. Canines in a single breed, e.g. Labs, just like humans, have different formed skeletons. Even though Labrador Retriever breed may have the fundamental qualities noted in most Labrador retrievers, one could have a heavy boned skeleton while a different one won’t have a similar size bones and density.

This is turn can cause a major difference in the “perfect weight” of the same size Labs. Whereas one that weighs 90 pounds with large bone density, is a perfect weight and the one with less bone density that weighs 90 lbs. would be considered overweight. The expert advice of your vet will quickly determine this for you.

FACT 5: Certain kinds of dogs are predisposed to being obese. Research has proven that genetics, which lead to developing body fat in lab rats also, may take part in the same role in canines. Regrettably, you will find different kinds of K-9’s that have a tendency being overweight due to genes. Only a couple of of those breeds are, Collies, Bassett Hounds, Shelties, Labrador Retriever, Dachshunds, Cockers yet others.

Please understand this doesn’t mean every dog, in the breeds mentioned, is going to get fat. However, it does mean you should be on guard for the possibility, if your dog is one of these breeds, may be one of the ones affected because of genetic inheritance. Once again a call to your vet will quickly reveal if the breed you own is predisposed to obesity.

FACT 6: Age is really a element in overweight dogs. A lot of dogs started to put on pounds beginning around age 2 yrs. This really is generally round the age where they start to mature and be somewhat less active. You will notice this inclination to achieve weight directly on up in to the twelve year range. Because the dog becomes older this “weight gain” has a tendency to level off and actually will decline with proper dieting and exercise.

FACT 7: Medications can contribute to obesity in your pet. Just as in humans, meds “man’s best friend” is on, may well increase their appetite and even cut down on the metabolic rate. Thus the meds may lead to eating a lot more food and depressing the burning off of calories through the natural process of converting it to energy. Again keeping your vet advised as to your pet’s weight gain, may result in a change of the meds to help decrease the added pounds.

These details simply I and Part II are only a sampling from the information you should know to assist your overweight dog. The local vet may have more information that may help you keep the dog healthy and provide you with and “Fido” years of companionship together.

Faq’s About Overweight Dogs:

1.	Will having my dog fixed (neutered/spayed) cause my dog to get fat? No. Having your dog fixed is not the cause of your pooch getting fat. The real cause is that most dog lovers don’t realize that their dogs’ energy requirements will be less and continue to feed them the same amount of food as they did before they had them fixed.

For many people, pets are just a great part of life. A part of life that can be hard to train sometimes. There are lots of tips on adult dog training available these days, and I would like to talk about a few of them.

While many pet owners have adult dogs that have never been trained before, many owners are realizing that having a well-trained pet in the house is much easier on them.

If you are looking to train your dog to do some complex tricks and such, you may need a bit of extra training yourself, as this kind of thing needs more specialized attention. If you are looking for more traditional methods and techniques, there are plenty to choose from.

If you simply want your dog to not go potty in the house, or become accustomed to a crate, that is very doable in a short amount of time.

If your dog has some behavior problems, obedience training may be what you need to get him more in line with how you would like him to behave.

There are traditional methods, such as classical conditioning available for you if you are looking to correct some simple behavior problems like social anxiety.

Classical conditioning is the process of introducing your friend to situations that may scare him a little, or a lot. As you do this again and again, he will become less anxious or frustrated as you increase the excitement for him.

One simple technique that is very popular is to use something called lure reward training. By using a dog treat, or his favorite toy, you can lure him into following commands with the treat as an aid.

Say you want him to sit on command. You could try the following technique:

* Tell the animal to sit down while using his name. Ex: “Roscoe, sit boy”.

* Move the treat over his nose so that he has to look up way over his head. This causes him to look so far back that he will sit naturally.

* You want to be careful to not raise the treat up, as the dog may try to jump up for it, which is not what we want.

* When he sits like you want, you may reward his good behavior with a treat.

Another popular way to try to relax your dog is through the use of a crate. Many people associate crates with punishment, but if used properly, they can be a source of relaxation.

You can accomplish relaxation with the use of a crate, and the upside is that your dog will be relaxed in it regardless of where you take him. This is true for a trip to the vet, and a road trip.

You will see the rewards of having a dog that is obedient and trained soon, with a little patience and practice. Once he is trained, you will both have a great and happy relationship.

Matt finds training his dogs very rewarding and fun. If you are looking for some tips on <noindex>adult dog training</noindex>, you can visit his <noindex>dog training</noindex> website and find out how to have a happy dog.

It’s finally here! You’ve passed by that pet store or animal shelter so many times deliberating the pros and cons of animal ownership and you got it at last. The new puppy is home. Great–what now? Play times with the young pup is a great time to bond and enjoy each other’s company but there’s more to having a dog than that. Puppies don’t know what’s appropriate from inappropriate behavior and not knowing this might harm him or people around him. House training a puppy usually takes place then. If you’re new at this, it’s all good — we were all new once. You will need the four basic puppy training tips as listed below to help you in your endeavors of raising a happy and well-adjusted dog.

1. You have to establish a right relationship with your puppy. What do I mean? The foundation of every healthy man-canine relationship is the establishment of your authority over him. You can shower him with love and affection but do not neglect to set your leadership in his eyes. Teach the dog some basic commands that will give him the chance to obey you. Say ?Sit!? and gently lower him to the desired position. Praise him well for properly accomplished tasks. Do not give in when he whines and complains of anything you have set. If you do so, he will use this to his advantage and you will risk a domineering dog in the future.

2. Your puppy must be potty trained. One of the first things in house training a puppy is proper toilet manners for canines. Bring him outside to poop fifteen minutes after every meal. Choose a specific area for his discharge and walk around it until he finally unloads. Immediately praise him when he does. Follow up on this every day for two weeks and he will begin to understand. If he makes a mistake and you find dog poop or pee indoors, scrub the area clean with a deodorizer to mask the smell, lest he returns to reclaim his spot.

3. Your puppy will need to develop and grow his social skills. The best time for socializing a puppy is anytime before 3 months of age. Some puppy training tips you can use for socializing the dog is to invite your friends over to meet him. Bring him to busy places and let him play with other healthy animals. Also let him get used to being groomed so that he will not get aggressive and whiny when people pet and touch him in the future. Properly socialized puppies grow up to be healthy, happy and self-assured dogs.

4. You must speak the language puppies understand. The best and probably the only language most animals understand is rewarding him for being good and scolding him for being bad. That part is easy; the trick lies in doing it consistently every day. You cannot reprimand him for being overly aggressive at play one day and the next day overlook the same behavior. This confuses the puppy. Be consistent in your training.

Simple right? Puppy training tips just go on from here but these are the fundamental issues you need to deal with and the others will be easier. Make a commitment in training your puppy; it is fun and interesting. You will find yourself itching to get another one before long.
