Opening the door to your house for your new puppy is a feeling that just can’t be explained. It is pure happiness to watch them run around and investigate their new residence. Now the amusement doesn’t have to stop instantly but we must start laying down some ground work. Puppy obedience training is part of owning a dog and must begin right away.

Don’t lose sleep if this is your first puppy here is some help. The key here is to use positive feedback and reinforcement when your puppy exhibits desirable behaviors. Appropriate corrective methods can be used when your puppy exhibits behavior you consider undesirable. We need to pay attention and not disregard the puppy’s behavior whether it’s desirable or undesirable. Repetition is the key here to establish proper learning. Consistency is essential both with the commands you use and making sure we practice puppy obedience training daily.

We always want to use positive verbal praise and even a treat at times when our puppy performs something properly or acts desirable. Don’t forget that repetition will be the key to learning. Your puppy is extremely intelligent but it will take some practice for him/her to really get it down.

Spanking your puppy or putting it’s snout in their accident is tempting to some but not effective when it comes to puppy obedience training. This ultimately just makes your puppy afraid of you. This does not form a healthy bond. Do you think she will come when you call out, if she thinks she is going to get a smack?

Chewing is a part of your puppy developing into a dog. If he is chewing on something he shouldn’t then use a strong “No” or “Bad”. Consistency is important so choose your word and stick to it. If you find him chewing a lot on something he shouldn’t then make sure he has something that is okay and praise him when he chews on that toy instead.

Biting is something all puppy’s do and their sharp teeth hurt. It’s not that they are trying to be hurtful, they are babies and teething is natural. You do need to set limits, you should not permit your puppy to gnaw hands or feet. Patience will be essential here. If she bites you make sure that she knows she hurt you by yelping. Use a firm voice and instantly stop playing. She will learn that biting ends playtime.

It is extremely critical to start and set a schedule for both you and your puppy. Get your puppy used to waking up and going outside to use the bathroom at the same time each morning. Feeding your puppy at the same time each day is also critical. How often you feed your puppy and how much will differ depending on the breed. Always schedule some play time in for your new pup. Scheduling everything and being consistent will help speed the training process.

Even though your new puppy is loads of fun she/he does not come without work. But with some tolerance, consistency and repetition your puppy can be trained and respectful in no time at all. Puppy obedience training gives you the tools and groundwork for your dog to be a fantastic friend and companion for many years to come!

Certain breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers may need a little extra TLC when it comes time to housebreak them. House training puppies can be tough work, but well worth the time and effort invested. With the smaller breeds sometimes it takes a wee bit longer to develop perfect potty habits.

You should begin by first determining if the potty spot will be located inside the home or outside. People who live in condos and apartments tend to favor Yorkies since they don’t need much space. You might find that your Yorkie prefers an indoor potty if he is resistant to going outside during cold weather. Another consideration to remember is that these dogs have small bladders, so they can only hold so much! if you are regularly out of the house each day for more than a few hours, you cannot expect your dog to be able to control his bladder for extended periods of time. In this case, choose a discreet area of your home for the puppy training pads. Otherwise, any small strip of grass should do the trick, as long as you use that same spot all the time.

Starting and ending the walk with an opportunity to go potty is the best approach until you begin to understand your little one?s potty schedule. Going to the same location is important to help your Yorkie associate that location as the potty area and if he can smell urine, that sends a signal that this is the place to go. Being a good neighbor is important, so always carry litter bags so you can scoop the poop. It’s fine if your Yorkie happens to go while you are out on the walk, this is not considered an “accident” since it didn’t happen on the floor or other unwanted area.

Sometimes dogs avoid going outside in bad weather and then will have an accident in a discreet location indoors. A sweater is a great way to address that situation and make going out in poor weather more tolerable. If this is the case, you might want to think about an indoor alternative for these situations.

Don’t be afraid to heap lots of praise and affection on your puppy in order to help him learn proper potty habits quickly. Verbal praise should be given immediately and enthusiastically after they are done with their business. A favored treat such as a small piece of cooked chicken or dried liver offered as a reward may give him just the incentive needed!

Anywhere from a week to a month house training a dog is common, and for Yorkies it could be a little longer, so have patience with your little one! Learn how to train a puppy properly and you will be rewarded with a wonderful relationship between you and your Yorkshire Terrier.
