Jellyfish, without any doubt, are one of the most enigmatic creatures in the ocean. Although they have been noticed thousands of years ago, it was not long ago when we hardly knew anything about them. Perhaps, people who are above 25-30 years old remember that jellyfish could not been seen very often: actually, only the best aquariums used to have this “strange creature” living in it.

But nowadays, it is very easy to purchase a jellyfish and look after it in your own aquarium. What a sudden change? How could things have altered for 50 years? Could the jellyfish have evolved? Hmm, it is definitely not a good guess since evolution is a process which takes millions of years, not a couple of years! The answer is somewhere else.

The truth is that we are already able to have “jellyfish pets” thanks to the great scientific progress. We already know what the jellyfish eat, what temperature of the water they like, even how they “give birth”. So, it is not surprising that looking after a jellyfish is already effortless and absolutely possible. You could even take care of several jellyfish pets depending on the size of your aquarium- it is your only limit!

You may not believe it but the interesting facts do not end here. We already made it clear that jellyfish could be looked after in every aquarium. But did you know that they have actually become the most desired pets for the first 3 months of 2010. Yes, it sounds amazing but it is a fact. You look after a snake in aquarium? Forget about that! Get it out of there, fill the aquarium with water and start petting a couple of jellyfishes. It will be so much fun. Of course, making your aquarium good for jellyfishes, you should spend some money on equipment. For example, you need to keep the same temperature of water, keep up the level of oxygen etc.

So, if you love experiments, you definitely should try looking after a jellyfish. It will be totally new to you, respectively totally interesting! But if you are a “thinker”, you’d probably like to think everything through before having made such an “important decision”. Basically, there is nothing you should think through or worry about. Looking after jellyfish is cheap, easy and it is not time-consuming whatsoever. All you need to do is feed your new pets regularly and make sure that the aquarium is working properly so that the water’s temperature and levels of oxygen are exactly as much as they are supposed to be.

Learn to keep jellyfish at home today. It’s not as hard as you might think. We recommend you start with the <noindex>Moon Jellyfish</noindex>.

Angelfish are members of one of the largest families of vertebrates on the planet. The family Cichlidae encompasses over 1,300 scientifically classified species in 220 different genera. New species are being added to this family every year. It is highly possible that there could be as many as 3,000 species that fall within the scientific classification of this family. This family, more commonly known as cichlids, includes oscars, discus and tilapias. Many sources will tell you that angelfish are endemic to the Amazon River in Brazil. While this is true, this species also inhabits both the Orinoco River and Essequibo River basins. Angelfish populations are common throughout Guyana, Venezuela, and Columbia as well as Brazil.

Cichlids have become ever more popular with freshwater aquarists since 1945. Angelfish are inarguably among the most popular and easily recognizable freshwater species on the planet. Their distinctive triangular profile makes them one of the most exotic freshwater species on the market. The selective breeding of these creatures has increased the variety of angelfish available to the consumer. Angels come in a variety of color pallets, from solid black, gold, white, and silver to striped, marbled and Koi. Their abundance keeps their price extremely reasonable. They are a hardy species that can stay alive in a multitude of environmental conditions. Angelfish are unproblematic fish to keep healthy and happy. Their ease of care has undoubtedly increased their over all popularity.

While angels will not grow anywhere near the size of an oscar or a discus, they are not a small species. The angels you see in pet shops are almost certainly quite young. They routinely reach six inches in length when fully grown. They can be housed in a rather small aquarium when they are young. A fully grown angel, however, should not be housed in tank less than 10 gallons in size. A 20 gallon aquarium is advisable.

Angelfish are peace loving fish. Angelfish are wonderful community dwellers. A word of advice: They will instinctively regard smaller occupants of an aquarium as a food source. Do not house them with species like rasboras, zebra danios and fancy guppies. You also do not want to mix them with species like barbs and tetras. Both of these species types are notorious fin nippers. An angelfish’s full, billowing fins are mouth-watering taste treat, too appealing to pass on.

This is an omnivorous species. Their diet should be comprised of both plant and animal matter. You will want to make sure to choose a fish food prepared for omnivores as a main staple. A good quality flake food is all you will need to keep your angelfish on top of it game. Many fish hobbyists prefer to provide a variety of dietary supplements in addition to the primary diet. Although this is not mandatory, it is a good practice. You might want to ask yourself; would you want to have the exact same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of your life? A diverse diet will help to eliminate the possibility of any nutritional deficiencies. Crushed seaweed sheets are a wonderful supplement for omnivores. Protein based supplements such as brine shrimp, tubifex and bloodworms will properly address the need for animal matter. If you can not find them fresh, frozen and freeze-dried variations are available commercially.

As natives of northern and central South America, angelfish are considered a tropical species. Angelfish are best suited to warmer water. A temperature range of 72-86 degrees Fahrenheit is optimum. Angels are a relatively long lived species. If properly care for you can expect them to live in excess of 10 years of age.

When it comes to parenting, aquatic species can be divided into two basic categories. There are those species that will desert their unborn eggs or even ingest them with no regard to parental obligations. Then there are the fish that exhibit varying amounts of brooding instinct. All cichlids fall to some extent in the latter category. Angelfish are what is known as open brooders. Open brooders lay there eggs out in the open as opposed to hiding them from possible predation by cleaning a flat surface like a rock or piece of wood in order to lay their eggs on. A common trait among brooders is that they will guard over the brood until they hatch. Generally the male adopts the role as the protector by standing guard while the female becomes the eggs’ caregiver. After the eggs are hatched, both parents will take an active role in tending the newborn.

Keeping a specific fish in a volume of water that is not large enough could have disastrous results. A knowledgeable fish owner wouldn’t consider keeping an angelfish four inch deep <noindex>wall mount aquarium.</noindex> If you enjoyed our article, uncover more fun filled facts on the world’s favorite <noindex>freshwater aquarium fish</noindex> by going to our fish buying guide.

This will be a beginners guide to setting up a tropical fish tank. You will need to take your time and make sure not to add fish to the tank right away as this could kill your fish. You must understand that it takes a little time for the water to fully cycle so your fish can live a long time and stay healthy.

Before you go out and start buying aquarium equipment determine what kind of fish that you will want to put in there and how many. This is necessary as you will need to know what size tank to get, if you are on a budget you will have to work with it. The general rule is for small to medium fish is 1 inch per one gallon of water.

The items that you will need to set up a fish tank are the aquarium, filter pump, heat pump. Optional items that you should get also are gravel, thermometer, lamp, decorations, and a back up filter pump in case the main one goes bad.

Once you have all of the necessary items to set up the fish tank find spot in your home where you will be keeping it. Make sure it is not somewhere that is going to be in the way, and that it is not blocking anything you might need to get to later.

The next thing that I would do is make sure that there are no leaks in the fish tank. Fill up the tank with water to the top, and just let it sit there for about a day, more if you want. Once that day is up check the surrounding area for any signs of water, once you know your tank is not leaking you can empty it.

When you are waiting to find out if your aquarium had any leaks or not you can start pre-treating gallons of tap water in jugs with water conditioner. One thing I do to speed up the process is add bacteria supplement to the water also, to get the perfect mixture ratio make sure to pay attention to the instructions on the bottle of water conditioner.

Now the tank is still empty so this would be the best time to add all of your decorations and gravel if necessary. Before you add gravel to the fish tank make sure that it is absolutely clean and free of dirt, this is very important. Wash the gravel and decorations with running water multiple times.

Once you have it decorated set up the rest of the equipment, the filter pump, the heater, overhead light, etc. Start adding all of the pre-treated water into the tank, once you have it to the top turn on your filter pump and heater. Let the water cycle for about a week before adding fish, make sure the water temperature supports the fish you want.

After a week of the water cycling you can add a few starter fish, this will help the conditions for future fish a lot better. Once you select a couple of starter fish, keep a close eye on them. I would not recommend added any more fish into the tank for about 4 to 6 weeks.

If you are looking for a better filtration system for your home aquarium, then the Fluval 405 aquarium filter gives you excellent filtration for an aquarium holding up to 400 liters, or 100 gallons. External multi-stage filtration makes the system easy to clean and maintain, which is why the Fluval is so popular among many home aquarium owners. Fluval has put a lot of effort into designing all of their filtration systems into optimizing maintenance, use of space, and filtration power just so you can get everything you need.

Amazing Features

Amazing qualities, such as instant priming and Aqua stop features that enable you to stop the water flow without disconnecting the hoses, provide the users a quick and trouble free maintenance for their filter. There is no need for manual siphoning due to its self-priming function which prevents leaks and other messes when your 405 is being cleaned and maintained. As the chemical and biological media are kept in different compartments, you can easily replace one without having to take out both at the same time, only if needed.

Guaranteed by the Best

This aquarium filtration system is UL approved and has a 3 year guarantee, operates off of 120 volt household current at 60 Hz, using 22 watts while filtering 225 gallons per hour. The lift-lock clamps keep the cover securely in place for safe and consistent operation and when you are ready to clean the filter, the tightly fitted lid is easy to open and lift off. The updated intake strainer, pre-packed media and the pre-assembled parts make the filtration system easy to take out of the box and start using in a matter of seconds.

Convenience and Value

The filter is small enough to easily fit into many spaces as its measurements are at 8.75″ x 6″ x 16.75″. This enables the filter to use up the entire canister space so that the water flow would increase, providing better efficiency and optimal filtration that other aquarium filters fail to offer. Due to the smooth and quiet operation of the 405, your home aquarium will be turned into a relaxing distraction instead of a noisy and annoying one. Costing at around a few hundred dollars, the Fluval filters come with four media baskets which contain carbon bags, suction cups and biological media. Also available with it are two foam blocks, an instruction manual and DVD, and an intake and outlet tubing. In the Fluval filters line of products, this filter comes in the middle just after the less expensive models and just before the Fluval FX-5.

In Conclusion

Fluval 405 filters are very useful for aquarium owners because it solves all their problems to owning an aquarium. Many complain that cleaning their filtration systems can be very hectic and it is very hard to find canister filters with enough power. The 405 solves these problems by optimizing an increased water flow for better cleaning and filtering and this is one of its main features that separate it from the rest. They are extremely affordable, easy to operate and maintain, as well as providing an easy cleaning process. They are the better choice and should always be kept in mind when purchasing a canister aquarium filter for your home aquarium.

If you own an aquarium, keeping your fish happy and healthy is the most important thing. Fish can get many diseases and this can be costly and stressful. Preventing disease is the best cure. There are some things that you can do to stop and prevent diseases.

Preventing disease is the best cure. There are some things that you can do to stop and prevent diseases. The most common way to get a disease is when a new fish is brought into the tank and already has the disease. When buying new fish make sure they look healthy. If a fish is swimming sporadically it probably has a problem. Some other signs are if a fish lingers at the bottom of the tank or swims upside-down. Make sure that the fish are healthy before you let them into the tank.

Diseases can enter a tank if the tank is not cleaned properly. When you clean your tank, wash out the tank well. Try not to use bleach, because if any residue is left it will kill your fish. If you use soap, you need to make sure all of the soap is washed out of the tank.

The plants, gravel and dcor should also be washed. When the fish are healthy move them into the clean tank. Watch that tank for a few days to make sure the disease if fully killed. If any disease re-established, move the fish back into the infected tank until the disease is gone. Move all the healthy fish into the other tank that is healthy. Clean the infected tank out fully.

If you get a disease in a tank, you should always have a backup tank to move the fish into. If some of your fish are already infected, move the healthy fish into the other tank. The sick fish should be treated in the same tank until they are healthy. After the fish are healthy again, move them into the other tank, and clean the infected tank out.

Protecting the fish in your tank is very important. To protect your fish from disease there are a few things to remember. Clean your tank regularly, at least once a month. If your fish start acting weird, they could have a disease. Finally, check your fish before you buy them. Doing all these things will greatly reduce the chances of your fish getting a disease.

Fish tanks can be very enjoyable to own, but finding the right combination of fish can be difficult. The wrong types of fish can cause many problems. Having the right types of fish can be very difficult to choose. This article will focus on some of my favorite combinations of fish. The types of fish you raise really depend on the tank you want, to have.

Raising fish to breed is a fun and most common way for raising fish. If you want to raise fish for breeding, I would suggest a bigger tank with lots of hiding places. The fish that I would first choose would be some Mollies and Guppies. Mollies and Guppies are very nonviolent fish and have many offspring. For bottom feeders I would suggest some Cory Cats and Bristlenose Plecostomus. Breeding tanks must be very peaceful for the offspring to survive.

Community tanks are, in my opinion, the funniest type of tank to own. With a community tank, you can have many types and varieties of fish corresponding peacefully. For a good community tank, there are many possibilities. I would suggest colorful fish that actively swim around the tank. Barbs, Angel Fish, Kribensis are my favorites. For bottom feeders, Loaches, Cory Cats and Plecostomus are my favorite.

If you just like a certain type of fish, or would like interesting fish to own I would suggest Cichlids. African Cichlids are very fun fish to rise, but can be very difficult. Finding the right type of Cichlids can be difficult and the wrong kind can cause fighting. Only get the same species of Cichlids in a tank, and you will be fine. Cichlids are egg layers and very protective of their young.

There are some fish that can be very hard to raise no matter the circumstance. I have had experience with certain types of fish that are impossible to raise. Jack Dempsies eat other smaller fish and I would not suggest owning one to begin with. Chinese Algae Eaters are very good at eating algae, but have one problem, they suck the slime off other fish and can kill them.

If you are new to fish raising, I would suggest using a few of these combinations to start with, you can add more fish and experiment as your tank grows. I would not start out with aggressive fish, these fish can be very difficult to own even if you are experienced. Trying new combinations of fish is good, but after you add a new fish, watch the fish to for a while to make sure they fit in.

Whether you are moving to a new house, renovating or just need to move your tank, there is a right way to move the tank so the fish are not shocked or die. There are a few ways to move a tank, depending on the size shape and location. The easiest way will be shown step by step in this paragraph.

First, you need to figure out how far you are moving the tank. The size of the tank also needs to be taken in account for. If you are renovation or need to move the tank from one part of the house to another, the distance is a big factor in moving your tank.

If your tank is smaller than ten gallons then you will need to empty the water out of the tank to move it safely. To drain the water from the tank, vacuum the water from the tank like cleaning the tank, Leave about an inch of water in the tank so some minerals are left in the tank.

Third, move the tank with the small amount of water, and gravel to the new location. Set up the tank in the now location. Make sure you replace all the water with the correct type. Let the tank re adjust to its normal temperature, the heater s should tank a little while to heat the tank. When the tank is at the right temperature float the fish in the tank for thirty minutes,

When the tank is at the right temperature float the fish in the tank for thirty minutes.

When you are ready to re fill the tank, fill it with the right type if water for the fish. Put all the accessories and plants back before the fish, Make sure the heaters have been going for awhile, so that the tank is to the warmth the fish need. If the water is too cold or hot the fish will go into shock. Float the fish in the water, just like when you purchase new fish, to prevent shock. If you follow these steps then your tank will be happy and healthy.

It doesn’t readily occur to people that the aquatic creatures in ponds, lakes, rivers, what have you, live the same way that we do – on energy from the sun. It’s easy to look down into the gloomy half-dark world they inhabit and to feel that in an aquarium, they could not want anything more than to be kept in a dark corner all the time and be blinded with bright lights when guests need to see how the light bounces off their iridescent scales. As it turns out, fish and all the pretty plants in an aquarium don’t quite work that way.

The light from the sun and moon may not be quite so bright for them in their natural habitat, but it does exist, and if you see yourself running an aquarium full of bright happy and healthy fish, you do need to replicate for them in your aquarium lighting, the kind of light and darkness that they would have enjoyed in their natural habitat.

Aquarium lighting comes in all kinds intensities and technologies. There are the regular fluorescent strips, the compact fluorescent lamps, metal halide lamps and light emitting diodes – every kind of lighting technology there is, as you can see. If what you have on your hands is an aquarium with freshwater fish, these can survive very well on low-intensity fluorescent lighting. Fish actually like fluorescent lighting much better than incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent lights run cooler, and the light they put out is closer in appearance to daylight. If you’ve been kind to your little finny friends, you’ll have a few little plants colorfully waving around your tank looking for a little light for their photosynthesis.

Plants can’t do with the mild lighting that fish can get by on; they will need brighter aquarium lighting, typically around 5 Watts of fluorescent light for every gallon of water your tank holds. Plants actually use the light they receive for energy; if you have a saltwater aquarium, the algae on the live rock you’ll have used, will appreciate much better lighting too. The key word here is “full spectrum lighting”; these life forms need to receive light on all the wavelengths or colors that the sunlight would let them have. Regular fluorescent lighting will work fine, but actinic light will work even better for plants and algae.

But there can be too much of a good thing too when it comes to lighting. The fish have wake- and sleep-cycles just like us; the idea is then to give them as much darkness as they would have in nature. About 12 hours of darkness would not be a bad idea. Using aquarium lighting of too high an intensity or leaving it turned on for too long can be harmful for the environment in the tank; nuisance algae tend to feel encouraged and tend to take over your tank if there is too much lighting too. A good way to go about it would be to buy an aquarium light timer. The fish will have a steady day- and night-cycle they can count on and you can be sure that you will never forget to make the sun come up or go down for the fish. You wouldn’t want to pull a Truman Show climax-like scene on your fish now would you?

To any aquarium hobbyist, the exciting and creative time to be had building your own little underwater fantasyland often can feel let down by what follows: watching a week’s pall of dirt and dullness settling over everything that you prized for its clear color and healthful liveliness. The joy of building and owning a beautiful aquarium asks of only a small sacrifice: the will to work some regular time for cleaning into your schedule, as you would to walk your air breathing pets. Aquarium maintenance as it happens, deals with more than merely a good scrubbing for everything in sight that is slimy; you need to know any little about water chemistry and the biological requirements for healthy fish life as well.

The typical aquarium needs a little hands-on time about twice a month. The maintenance routine usually begins with switching off electricity to the tank, for safety’s sake. Aquarium maintenance shops typically get a lot of business from first-time hobbyists who scrub their tanks without thinking about how today’s tanks mostly come in acrylic and not glass. Replacing sccratched panes can be a tidy business. Acrylic needs special cleaning techniques. A good way to go, cleaning the algae film off the front of your aquarium would be to use an improvised plastic scraper, an old credit card for example. Cleaning the salt deposits off the front window in a saltwter aquarium, is important too. When you clean out your aquarium filter, do no more thorough a job than rinsing it in any water you took out of your tank. The filter’s medium holds a valuable collection of friendly bacteria; if you just took it out to clean under the tap, you would waste a lot of it.

Most of the uneaten fish food and water, bodily waste and other debris collects in the gravel and substrate that lines the bottom of your tank. There are special aquarium vacuum cleaners available that can help you with this part of your aquarium maintenance routine. Cleaning your aquarium each time, you’ll find that you need to bail out and replace no more than about a quarter of its water capacity to keep things fresh. If you have a saltwater aquarium, you will need to put on your chemist’s hat and make sure that you have exactly the right level of saltiness to the water.

But freshly-made saltwater can sometimes sicken your fish, and you need to use water prepared a day in advance. You need a hydrometer to check for the right level of saltiness, you need to make sure that you use water with no chlorine in it; your aquarium supplies dealer will have the chemicals you need to clean the chlorine up out of the water that comes out the tap. It doesn’t take much more than that to keep your aquarium clean and your fish happy. Aquarium maintenance is not really difficult; it’s just that there’s just something about it that upsets even the most stable among us.

People have owned home aquariums for centuries, and arguably, their fish and aquatic setups got along very well without aid from the modern contraptions you would find at any self-respecting aquarium supplies dealer today. These new devices available today, the aquariums chiller, the powerful lighting or the protein skimmer, were not just thought up by bright marketing departments to part you from that last dollar; these were made for the true aquarium enthusiast, one who tries to expand his aquarist’s horizons delving into areas of aquarium-building heretofore unexplored: raising saltwater coral reefs, or raising exotic fish from cooler climes.

Building a coral reef in your home is no easy matter; these reefs occur naturally close to the water surface out in the sea, and are accustomed to receiving the full benefit of a day’s sunshine. There is no way you could keep these at home illuminated with just a couple of florescent lighting fixtures. Successfully raising coral reefs and the life forms dependent on them requires that you invest in lighting technology that’s really out there- metal halides, Very High Output fluorescents and so on. These do solve your lighting issues raising corals and other tropical life, but not without raising a problem or two of their own. Intense light will always come with intense heat. In the ocean, the heat, as much of it as the sun is able to supply, is pretty much lost in the vast volumes of the ocean’s waters.

An aquarium tank has just so much water, and can be heated up a degree or three with just a few hours of intense artificial lighting. When you switch off the lights at night, the small body of water that the aquarium is, it can hold the heat for only a couple of hours before the temperature in the tank plunges. The temperature swings can be distressing to your aquarium’s inhabitants, for the discomfort they cause and also for the amount of oxygen that warm water will quickly lose. And here enters the aquarium chiller.

Aquarium chillers can be quite expensive, running into hundreds of dollars for a reliable unit. You might think that using a fan would cool your tank adequately: there is a little added wrinkle to the problem though. To have a fan constantly playing on the top of the water will certainly cool it a couple of degrees; the fan will also hasten evaporation. It won’t be easy to top up the water levels either. In some cases you will need to spring for a special reverse osmosis filterto easily do this all the time.

It’s not really difficult buying a chiller; you just measure your tank for volume, and you buy a unit in proportion to the size. If you don’t live in a particularly hot desert-like area, a midsize 30 gallon tank will require a 600 BTU aquarium chiller and a large tank will require as much as 4000 BTU. Think of an aquarium chiller as an air-conditioner for your aquatic friends. Aquarium chillers can often be quite noisy, and can turn out to be stress contributors themselves. Check out online forums for the best brands to buy, and the best feature-choices to make.
