Quick Tips For Dog Travel

Nowadays many people travel with their dogs when going on vacation. When going on a trip with a dog you should consider a few things such as what type of transport will be used and what dog travel carrier to choose. The following things should be considered for the next trip you take with your dog.

1. How will you get there?

Services such as Amtrak and Greyhound are no good since they only allow service dogs.

A more controlled environment will be available when traveling by car. Don’t forget to plan for the special needs your dog will have when using rest areas. It must be suitable for walking your dog and should have a clear area for walking your dog.

2. Did you check with the airline?

Taking your dog with you by plane is a little more complicated. Make sure to plan in advance to reduce stress. Since flights may get delayed you may want to limit the number of layovers thus direct flights are best.

Most airlines have strict guidelines with regards to animals on their aircraft. They usually list specifics such as type of dog travel carrier etc. You should review these on the airline website or over the phone.

3. Has your dog ever traveled before?

Make sure your dog is ready for the trip. If your dog has only traveled to the vet by car he may not be too comfortable going on a trip. A good way to condition him for longer trips would be to take short trips to the beach, park etc. Your dog should be in good health when traveling so a vet checkup is vital. Check to see how your dog is around other people, this will be important as there will be several strangers on the trip.

4. What food are you taking?

Ensure you carry the same food you normally feed your dog. This will be a totally new environment for your dog and you don’t want to add further stress with strange foods. It may also be a good idea to only let him drink filtered water to avoid any problems.

These tips will save some time and reduce stress when traveling with your dog.
