There is professional help available when it comes to barn construction. The barn builders Washington residents find helpful are very experienced in the construction of many types of barns. They are able to construct just about anything from scratch or can assist with building a barn from a kit. Any staff or equipment that is required for the job is readily available at their finger tips. The types of barns they can build vary in design and origin, as shown below.

Dutch Barns- Dutch settlers were the first ones to begin constructing this style of barn. Many of them can still be seen in the valleys of Schoharie, Hudson, and Mohawk in New York. The roof of these barns are a very distinguishing feature on them; one side angles to the ground and the other side is a regular short roof.

Food for the animals can be contained in the cribs, as well as the animals themselves. Chinking in the walls wasn’t common in the construction of these barns. The outside was lined with vertical wooden slats and the roof had single wooden shingles. Most of these barns today are topped with asphalt shingles or tin.

Round Barns- Midwestern barns are often round barns. These had lots of storage, due to the lack of inner supports an a self-supporting roof. The farmer or rancher using this type of barn was also able to work in the same direction, making his job easier. The round shape also gives a lot more stability in the structure. The volume to surface ratio is amazingly high.

Crib Barns- The name of this barn depicts what it mostly consists of; cribs. These cribs were for housing animals or storing feed. There can be anywhere from one to six separate cribs inside.

Round Barns – The Midwest is where many of these barns flourish, where they were desired for their great volume to surface ratio. Circular barns use less materials, have greater structural stability, and they don’t need internal supports. With the self-supporting roofs and lack of structural supports, there is immense storage space available. The roundness of the barn also allows the farmer to work in one continuous direction.

Prairie Barns- These are also known as Western barns and are often used by ranchers with large herds of cattle. The way the peaked roof is positioned above the outside hayloft opening is the way most people recognize these barns. The large upper loft provides plenty of area for hay to be stored. This upper portion of the barn angles towards the ground, as the roof extends well past the regular stopping point of most barns.

While there are many other kinds of barns as well, these are the main designs that most people use as a basis for their own style. Many people prefer to hire the best barn builders Washington has to offer, in hopes of creating the perfect piece of architecture.
